Cracking the Code on How to Create a Great Living Online

A common misconception, I believe, is that in order to succeed at building an online business without having a bucket load of ready cash, we have to follow some kind of prescribed course. For example, build multiple Google AdSense-driven websites, or a shopping website, or a membership-based website, an industry news portal, and so on.

Solving problems and creating solutions. Sherlock Holmes hat

This morning, I had a flash of inspiration - one of those little thought streams that most folks get from time to time. So with ideas that are bathed in an uncommon clarity in mind, here's my present to you today:

It's not about the vehicle, rather it's about how we use it.

So what does that mean?

Well, the method we may choose as the means by which we may build one or more websites can be considered "the vehicle" that we hope will assist us to build the kind of web business we want. Common "vehicles" include:

  • Google AdSense.
  • Google AdWords.
  • Other ad networks like Commission Junction.
  • Including ads from sponsors (perfect for websites that are already receiving high visitor numbers).
  • An e-commerce web "shop".
  • Blogging (powered by ad networks or our own advertisement income).
  • Subcription-based membership websites.
  • And so on.

Already, there are millions of such websites that use a range of different "vehicles", yet only a few are doing well. So the method of web business building isn't really the main component that is responsible for the success of any one web business.

Those few successful web businesses who win do leave clues. For example, they:

  • Find new ways to identify with visitors on how to tackle problems that are important to their website users.
  • Master how to be seen as doing something that is fundamentally different to most other providers. Uniqueness pays.
  • Understand that search engines and web directories really are currently a free gift. So they either learn how to make the best of what search engines can offer, or employ someone who can do this task for them.
  • Create a memorable first impression with any and all websites they provide.
  • Actively devise ways for their visitors to like them. One way of doing this effectively is to earn respect. Visitors don't have to agree with us on every sentence we may write or speak; however, if they don't respect us, they're gone.
  • And most important of all: appreciate the awesome power of communication, using words, sounds (podcasts) and vision (video clips). Top providers learn how to communicate what they're about in ways that are on the same wavelength as their visitors, clients and customers. Website winners get in tune with those special people who choose to buy their products and services. That means, you can too.

That's it for this blog entry from occasional Sunday blogger, Brian Austin.
