Tip 21 to Tip 30 In Our Series Of Web Page Creation Tips, Techniques, And Short-Cuts To Help You Create Top Performing Web Pages That Consider People, Search Engines, And The Mobile Web, Especially Useful When You Have A Joomla-Powered Website

Tip 21: In Your Headings Structure Sequencing, Don't Follow A H1 Heading With An H3 Heading

Instead, go from H1 to H2, then if the H2 section calls for further related sub-headings, use H3. If your article makes sense having one H1 and all the rest of your headings as H2 (so no H3s needed), then so much the better, since H2s have more "importance weight" than H3s, H4s, H5s and H6s.

Tip 22: Do Be Expressive In Your Headings

How: whenever possible, include several words rather than just a single word. Example: if you're discussing masks for CPAP and BiPAP breathing machines, rather than just writing "Masks", use something like "Masks for CPAP and BiPAP Machines".

Why: to give extra "at a glance" information to your visitors — many of whom are skimmers and scanners — and to embed extra related, relevant keywords and key phrases within your H1, H2, or H3 headings, upon which search engines can act and hopefully benefit the ranking of your web page.

Tip 23: Consider Using Initial Capital Letters In Your Headings

Consider the example heading: "How You Format Your Headings Makes a Difference" — notice that each important word has a capital letter; instead of "How you format your headings makes a difference".

Why: initial capitals give your headings more power, more impact and more authority. In the second example, arguably, the non-capital-initialed heading is limp, powerless, wanting and unattractive.

Combined with carefully considered formatting, initial capitals can help make for a bigger impact, which means your articles are more likely to get read or scanned more by more people.

If you're selling a product or service, impact matters. However, sometimes a web browser may interpret initial capital headings as all capitals (Microsoft browsers often do this), so sometimes you may have no control over such situations.

Tip 24: The Same Rationale As in Tip 23 Also Applies To Using Headings Made Up Of Full Capital Letters

Sometimes, full caps can make an even stronger statement in headings and sub-headings. Though, in body text, I suggest, only use full capital letters for acronyms, or the occasional word.

Tip 25: To Gain Maximum Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Benefits, Turn On Links For All H1 Headings In Your Joomla-, Wordpress-, or Drupal-Driven Website

Usually, this goal can be achieved quickly and easily for every web page in your website by using the Article Manager Parameters button.

Why: any linked H1 headings are given greater importance within search engines like Google. If you don't like H1 headings showing as underlined, the stylesheet for your web design can be changed to update a single value, and every page within the entire site will be updated to match instantly.

Tip 26: Don't Routinely Press The ENTER Key Multiple Times Just To Create More Space Between Paragraphs

If your website design and web page editor are configured correctly, rarely will you need to repeatedly press ENTER just to create vertical space.

When you just press ENTER repeatedly, the extra empty line spaces look bad when viewed using mobile Internet devices and look amateurish for normal web browsers.

Spacing between paragraphs, before and after headings, etc., should already have been automatically set in the CSS files. Therefore, let the pre-designed stylesheet dictate spacing for all text elements.

Simple press your ENTER key once at the end of a normal text paragraph to create the spacing to start the next paragraph, heading, or sub-heading. This way, you can focus your creative energies on the content of the page.

Tip 27: Each Paragraph Should Start With An Opening HTML Paragraph Tag, And End With A Closing HTML Paragraph Tag

In the JCE WYSIWYG editor, we can do that easily simply by typing some text, and then press the ENTER key once, and start typing again. As soon as we press the ENTER key, and start typing again, we'll have automatically created a correctly formatted HTML paragraph. Simple!

Tip 28: Use italic formatting sparingly or just for the occasional word or phrase

Why: italics can be harder to read or scan by people when viewing digital content or online. In short bursts, italics can provide an important contrast and emphasis for the eye — because they force the reader to slow their reading speed.

However, in longer sequences, I suggest many readers will simply skip the sequence to go on to something that is easier to read. Nevertheless, sometimes, you may deliberately want to slow your reader down; in these instances, using italics for longer sequences can make logical sense.

Tip 29: Consider Putting The Most Important Paragraph In Your Content Page Article At The Start Of Your Article And Applying Boldface Formatting To The Entire Paragraph

Why: boldface text is given greater consideration by search engines and provides a signal to your reader or visitor. Your first paragraph can summarize your article for visitors, thereby saving them time and helping them understand if this article is what they want to access.

Tip 30: For Web Pages Especially, Make Your Paragraphs Short: Sometimes, One Or Two Sentences Are Ideal, And Make Each Paragraph Content Count

Why: reading online is harder for the human eye than when reading paper-based text. Therefore, long paragraphs online are less likely to be read or scanned.

Instead, make effective use of sub-headings as outlined elsewhere in this article. Also, short paragraphs look better when viewing the site using a mobile Internet device.
